Learning Objectives

The Operation House Call Course’s Learning Objectives:

  1. Model person first behavior, and understand person first thinking and language.
  2. Review supportive ways to deliver unexpected or difficult news.
  3. Practice building rapport in a home visit to a family who has a family member with intellectual/developmental disability (IDD).
  4. Monitor personal or subjective bias that might affect an evaluation or treatment of a person with IDD, including autism.
  5. Demonstrate sensitivity to sibling and family issues during the family visit or in class discussion.
  6. Increase awareness of resources and community systems available to families.
  • Important Note to students:  In OHC we believe any family who has a loved one with IDD, including the category of autism, is a teaching family simply by life experience.  It is the professional’s job to learn how any particular family or individual can inform their best practice.  These 6 Learning Objectives are what you as a students can glean from ANY family, even if they are unaware they are teaching you!  We respect our volunteer families for their passion to help you.
